Ordered subs for take out and they were by far the worse things I've ever seen. My daughter got a ham and cheese which consisted of three slices of ham, a slice of cheese and shredded lettuce. And for $9 bucks. The meals were supposed to come with chips which they couldn't even get that right. I was told they were busy and it would take 30 minutes but once I got there I saw just three cars in the entire parking lot. Don't even waste a dime at this dump.

The pizza crust tasted tough and dehydrated, with a texture similar to cardboard. The toppings were cheap and reminded me of a mall pizzeria chain. There are so many better pizza places in State College, I can't recommend this place.

Meh. That's about all I can say. Very hard to rate a restaurant when the food was positively devoid of any real flavor and aroma. I had a Pittsburgh Wedge (chipped beef, lettuce, thousand island, coleslaw, chesse), and the most flavorful thing was wrap. I know there was something in there based on the amount of grease & thousand island dripping on my plate. But I'll be damned if I could taste it. I also ordered a house salad - burnt croutons was the only memorable thing. Our beers (Sam Adams Winter Lager) was flat - not flat enough to send back, but worth noting here. Our server Casy was very good - a much higher caliber server than the food she served. I would go here again and give it one more chance if a group of friends invited me, but I wouldn't actively seek coming here again.

Oh, Hi-Way. In State College there isn't too many pizza places that have a dining room--especially on the north side of town. For the most part, their pizza isn't that great and I'm assuming that was the reason two other locations closed in recent years. However, the Sicilian (Square Cut) pizza is pretty good--that's all we get when we go there. We went there on Friday night. They were somewhat busy and completely disorganized. The hostess, in my opinion, is required to do way too much. She was responsible for taking phone orders, dealing with take-out, seating customers, and dealing with their small bottle shop. Needless to say, we waited about 5 min just to put our name in--something that should take seconds. She was stressed, so the friendliness that a hostess should have was non-existant. We then had to wait for 15 minutes, even though there were plenty of empty tables. We were finally seated only to be told it might be awhile for our waiter to get to us because they were so busy. Luckily, we didn't wait too long to put in our order. However, it took another 8-10 min to receive our drinks (a draft beer and a soda) and another 45 min for a small Sicilian pizza. The pizza tasted fine in the end. I'm also a self-proclaimed connoisseur of bread sticks. Their's is probably the worst I've ever had, so I would highly recommend NOT ordering them. They taste more like cardboard than bread. Overall, the lack of leadership (management/owner), training, and overall quality is leading to their demise. Many customers came in and left while we were there. I think it's unfair to the employees as well. There was a waitress that looked like she was worked there for quite some time--she was running around trying to pick up the slack from other poorly trained employees. Each time we've gone, there's been a different issue and I'm not sure we'll be going back. The only thing that brought us back is the close proximity to us and they have a dining room. If another pizza place would open up on this side of town, I do believe Hi-Way would go out of business.

After being seated we waited 20 minutes and no one came by even though 4-5 different wait staff used the wait station not ten feet from our seats. We saw the hostess point us out to the waiter for our section who then proceeded to take drink orders from a table that arrived 10 minutes AFTER we did. It would be one thing if the place was jammed and staff was scrambling, but the place was maybe at 1/4 capacity. No excuse. HiWay I a fond memory from our childhood but it is a shadow of its former self. So yourself a favor: skip this place for Faccia Luna or Brothers Pizza by the Mall. You will get better service and better food.

This place has changed and in a good way ! Great food (for what is expected at a pizza joint in Central PA) and nice wait staff. Very clean too ! I ordered the philly cheesesteak and was completely satisfied :]

I used to love Hi Way pizza, but tonight it was just ok-- have been there and worked there before and have had sensational pizza-- don't know what the deal was that night.

The N. Atherton incarnation of Hi-Way hits the spot for pizza place fare--think steaks and calzones and pasta in addition to a decent selection of pizzas, which run about $15-18 for an eat-in large. They have cheap beer specials and a nice sit-down area in addition to a bar (which I swear is always empty). As an "uptown" State College resident, I appreciate the location more than anything else.

Don't get anything other than the pizza here. Sicilian pizza here is very good but their other offerings are poor.

I ordered angel hair pasta with a side of meatballs for delivery. One, delivery took 90 minutes. Second, I was missing a side salad. Third, I paid nearly $20 . The sauce was so garlicky that i have the smell of garlic coming out of my pores. The garlic bread was not really garlic bread. It was 2 pieces of bread brushed with butter and lightly toasted. Nothing more. Both pieces of garlic bread came cold and very soggy. During my 90 minute wait for my late dinner, I could have easily ventured to Giant and prepare the exact meal for $7. I would have hot and fresh food and it would have cost me a lot less. You can say I will never be ordering from this restaurant again.

I'm shocked by all the brutal reviews on here. We were told about this place by a few former Penn State grads who raved about the pizza, but almost didn't come due to all the poor reviews on YELP. Fortunately, our recommendations were spot-on. How anyone could bash this place baffles me. When in State College you'll be pressed to find better service, pizza, salad and a clean, upbeat atmosphere. Sure, this place isn't on campus, but that's a good thing. It keeps you away from the young, underage crowd. Fortunately all our food was exceptional. The salad we started with tasted crisp, fresh and came packed with tasty veggies, solid greens and wonderful dressing. We weren't hungry, but also dove into a few dishes, the homemade ravioli, meatball sub and a pizza. It was obvious the meatballs were homemade as was the ravioli. The cooks here take time and effort into creating fresh dishes and it doesn't go unnoticed. As for the pizza, it was the best we had in town (sorry Otto's and Faccia Luna). And, who could complain about homemade desserts? This place has far more value than YELP is giving it. And, if you come while in town with a group of friends or to go to a sporting event, you'll leave happy. Keep in mind, there's plenty of flatscreens in here to watch any sporting event. Put this place on the top of your list when in State College.

I used to love the food here. My family would order pizza from here at least once a week. ...Until we started finding hair baked into the pizza dough. It happened twice. The first time, we chalked it up to bad luck. Mistakes happen... right? Well, it ended up happening again a few months ago. We have not been back since. I will say the management did refund us our money, even though it was a delivery and they weren't there to see the offending hair themselves - that was certainly appreciated. They did everything within their power to make it right, and they deserve credit for that. But we won't be back again because of this.

I guess it doesn't matter if it sucks since its in a college town people will go at least once so the owners don't give a crap. Calamari was the absolute worst I ever had and the cool should be ashamed and know better. The rings where 1/2 inch diameter. Where did they find it so tiny??? It tasted like battered turds because they where so minuscule. Pizza and Stromboli overlooked ...crust hard burnt and crumbled apart like biting into a brick. Never again.

After our first 2 visits (2 nights in a row!)we were hooked, but unfortunately we are not local. Stopped back at Hi-Way Pizza 7 months later when we were driving through PA, and it's as good as we remembered! We really only get the white pie (tried the margherita once too, and it was just okay) so this review is limited in scope, but if you get the white pie you can't go wrong! Service is good, the bar has never been crowded when we've come in. They have a dozen taps and at least a half dozen different games on the TVs. Plenty of bottled beers & carry out available in 6 packs.

The pizza is fine, but overpriced. The service is unspeakably bad. Being stupid and incompetent is a job requirement. Never again.

Visiting this restaurant is like playing the lottery: you never know what you're going to get. This is why I've given it 2 stars. Sometimes I visit this place and it's a 5-star experience, other times it's a 1-star experience. Seriously, this place is the official ROLLER COASTER of pizza shops in State College. I never know what to expect each year. And perhaps the problem is that they turn over staff like there's no tomorrow. during one visit we had to send back out Flaky Crust pizza (which is normally one of the signature items of this place) because the crust didn't rise properly, which means it wasn't made and/or cooked properly. The waitress confessed that they had a new cook, so this is why. I've been here when their food is top-notch too. They used to make fried zucchini that was the best in town: light batter, thinly sliced, and cooked perfectly. Now it's just fat wedges with no taste. And sometimes their pasta is amazing. Other times it's a futile attempt at boiling stale, dry, boxed pasta. There are times I've been here when the wait staff is super friendly, very helpful, and very patient, and then times (like my last visit in September of 20014) when the waitress we had was rude, made excuses, didn't tend to refills. and went about chatting with other staff while we were waiting for something from her. It was the pits. Also, for delivery, the quality of the food is not worth its price. Way too expensive in a town that has better pizza places to deliver for far less. Hi-Way Pizza manager/ownership: if you're reading this review, I hope this is a wake up call for you. I've lost my patience in you. I'm tired of playing Hi-Way Pizza Roulette with your food, cooks, and wait staff. If you turn over staff so frequently, you better spend time training them or you'll get this disaster in which your guests are experiencing in September of 2014. Train better. And if the staff can't learn, fire them and get some new help. State College is a ripe market for hiring reliable restaurant staff.

For a pizza place in central PA, it's not bad. The crust is crispy, yet chewy and has a good thickness. We got the regular neopolitan with pepperoni on half. The pep has a great taste and crisped up nicely and the cheese wasn't greasy at all. We started with an order of brew city fries, which had a flavorful and crispy coating. Overall, a good little place and the prices are right on point.

So, here it goes. My past visits have been fantastic. Until the last one. To be honest, I hated our waitress. It was a Tuesday night and the place wasn't dead but not very busy, either. I ordered tea but they didn't have any of the flavors that were advertised on the menu. Okay, whatever. I usually order the unlimited pasta, soup, salad, and bread sticks. I always get both: soup and salad. When the waitress asked me which one I wanted, I told her that I wanted both. She paused and I asked her if it was possible to get both. She sighed and told me laboriously that it was fine. I don't understand this because both soup and salad are offered every other time I come here. I am probably not going to come here anymore because I was really turned off by the attitude. I left the minimum tip of 15% which pained me because I hate giving someone money when they give me attitude. The food was absolutely delicious. Too bad the service didn't match.

Our go-to place for this type of dining in State College. We live about 30 min away but come up once a month or so to do some shopping/go to events and Hi Way Pizza is always a must. I'm a huge buffalo chicken anything fan, so to be their buffalo chicken pizza can't be matched. The herb crust compliments it well rather than some typical bland Papa Johns style average pizza crust. The chicken is real roasted chicken, not the chunks you usually seen on buffalo chicken pizza that looks like it's from a can. Also a fan on the spinnacoli pizza. Pesto, spinach, broccoli, Gouda, tomatoes, on a sesame crust. YUM. Service is usually good, occasionally crappy, or like our visit tonight: exceptional. Our waiter was a young guy, I think his name was David, and he was on the ball. He was polite, friendly, and never did we have to ask for a drink refill. Will keep coming back.

Good pizza. Not the super greasy kind of pizza, not the cardboard kind of pizza, it's good, thin crust pizza with a wide variety of toppings to choose from. The meat-lovers is great, and my favorite, the Hawaiian, comes with gouda. The pizza sauce actually tasted like tomato. A step up from College-student style pizza. We were in here on an empty night and service was quick and friendly. Pro-tip for people not from PA: this place is also a "bottle-shop", meaning on your way out, you can pick up a 6-pack instead of an entire case of beer (the way PA prefers to sell it). Convenient. This place was one of my favorites 20 years ago, nice to see it's still around and still good.

Terrible service. We waited over an hour for our food. Our server forgot to turn in the order. We were given nachos since we had to wait so long. We ordered the vodka sauce pizza. The crust was delicious. The prosciutto tasted more like capicola. Drinks were watery. The management comped us the meal which was only right. Don't go if you have a schedule to keep. Food was so so.
